SHOW OFF – March, 2010

Billed as a ‘Celebration of Industry’, the CIABC’s 1st Annual ‘Show Off’ raised spirits and industry profile, and raised money for charity in the process. 13 of the best CIABC member salons from throughout the province banded together on March 29th to do what they do best, let their creative spirits soar and release the resulting performance art to peers, friends and family in a night of performance art, comedy and community bonding.

The original concept was simple; since the ABA show was ‘off’ for 2010, due to venue issues beyond organizers’ control, we thought it was high time our own industry stepped up to ‘show off’. It has been said that our industry loves to do just that, show off. The breathtaking and poetic work of our members that graced the stages of the Stanley theatre on March 29th proved it to be true yet again. 60 minutes of theatrical and inspiring salon performances astounded a full house with works of passion that proved BC definitely has talent that shows no sign of winding down. Although grappling with an incredibly short deadline of 6 weeks, it took little prompting to get those 13 member salons on board. Once they were asked to partake and show off their best work, the event began to take shape as something we knew immediately would become annual.

Event coordinators chose ‘Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada’ as the charity to benefit from Show Off. Again, industry came together with cooperative efforts resulting in raising $6000.00. That full amount was given to Children’s Wish recipient Krystina, whose life dream was to visit Disneyworld. Way to go industry!

The CIABC has already begun plans for Show Off 2011, so please stay-tuned for further updates. Current CIABC members will be in on the scoop and involved in next year’s show before everyone else! For membership information, please visit us our membership page.

Edwin Johnston hits Kelowna

Beautiful Kelowna's Marvel College was thriving with excitement on October 13th as Canadian Hairstylist of the Year, Edwin Johnston prepared his models for the following day's presentation. Marvel students had volunteered their hair to receive the latest cutting edge looks by Edwin.

With models ready to go, Edwin took the stage on October 14th at the Rotary Centre for the Arts. The theatre presentation was a fantastic way to exhibit his creations, showcasing strong perimeters with spectacular colour placements. Edwin's right-hand woman and wife, Fiona, Wowed the crowd with her creations of brilliant blonds, vivacious coppers and deep violets. But it wasn't just technique and artistry Edwin shared. He spoke of his experience with Contessa and provided words of wisdom through his personal business philosophies.

After the show, VIP guests received champagne, hors d'oeuvres and a chance to spend some time with Edwin and his assistants. What better way to end a show?

The next day was anything but lacking. Edwin and assistant Kevin led an intimate group of eager attendees in an in-depth seminar and hands-on workshop where the layered Bob was the featured hairstyle for the day. Great emphasis was put on technique, colour placement and finishing. Attendees got a chance to try their hand at this ever so popular style and get some one-on-one training with this Master Stylist, truly an unforgettable learning experience. Much feedback was received at the association office, proving this was definitely a 2-day event well received by those who attended.

Education on a Vacation

Where else can you enjoy fun in the sun and learn the latest industry trends.

The Education on a Vacation cruise was officially a 'cut' above the rest. From January 13th until January 20th, over six-hundred members of the cosmetology industry (including the Canadian Hair World Team) enjoyed sunshine, laughter and cocktails while gaining new knowledge on the latest industry styles and trends. The atmosphere could only be described as energetic, enthusiastic and excited. Grease lovebirds Danny and Sandy made a special appearance on the red carpet, along with the crew from Deal or No Deal, Elton John, several Marilyn Monroe's, Elvis, Posh and David and even Santa Claus. This "Walk the Red Carpet as your Favorite Celebrity" event will not soon be forgotten.

Special guest Manuel Rodriguez, Pivot Point International Educator and Trainer, held seminars on the art of competition which were not only packed with information but packed with people as well. Other popular seminars were Stephen Puddister's Contessa Unplugged classes, Schwarzkopf's hands-on workshops and LCN and Milday's seminars. After a week of daily power outages caused by sixteen hairdryers being used at once, it is safe to say that the Carnival Pride was a much quieter (and electrically reliable) place after the cosmetologists jumped ship at the end of the week.
